Search for "best electric coffee grinder" and you'll drown in options. This guide gives you the criteria to narrow them down.

A quick note up front: I grind by hand with a Timemore Chestnut S5 Pro and an EPEIOS Essence Go, and I don't use an electric grinder. So there are no hands-on impressions here, just what to look for.

Three types of grinder

  • Blade grinders: a spinning blade chops the beans. Cheap and compact, but the grind tends to be uneven, and you control coarseness by how long you run it.
  • Flat burr grinders: two flat burrs grind the beans. They give a more even grind and are common at pour-over-friendly price points.
  • Conical burr grinders: cone-shaped burrs that turn more slowly and are said to generate less heat.

If you make pour-over every day, start with a flat or conical burr grinder for a more consistent grind.

Five things to check

  1. Grind settings: for pour-over only, you just need a stable medium-fine to medium grind. If you want espresso too, you'll need fine-grained adjustment.
  2. Fines: lots of fine dust can make coffee taste muddy. Check whether the maker addresses fines and what reviews say.
  3. Cleaning: can you remove the burrs, and does it come with a brush?
  4. Noise and size: noise matters if you grind early. Measure where it will sit.
  5. Capacity: if you grind for the whole household, check hopper size.

Thinking about budget

  • Entry level: mostly blade grinders. Good for trying freshly ground coffee for the first time.
  • Mid range: where the go-to burr grinders sit. The realistic choice for daily pour-over.
  • Premium: models focused on grind uniformity and low fines.

Or consider a hand grinder

If you want silence, no power cord, and enjoy the grinding itself, a hand grinder is worth considering. See hand vs electric grinders and how to choose your first hand grinder.
