Japan has a long pour-over tradition, and a few Japanese makers have tried to put that craft into a machine. This guide compares three of the most talked-about: the design-led BALMUDA The Brew, and the TWINBIRD fully automatic coffee makers (6-cup CM-D465B and 3-cup CM-D457B), developed with Mamoru Taguchi of Tokyo's Café Bach and fitted with a mill using blades made in Tsubame-Sanjo, Niigata's famous metalworking town.
To be upfront: I have not used any of these three machines. This is based on official specs, retailer listings, owner reviews on Kakaku.com and Amazon Japan, and a hands-on video review. Prices are as of November 1, 2026 and change often.

All three are Japan-market models rated AC 100V, 50/60Hz.
- US/Canada (120V): many owners run 100V appliances on a step-down transformer. A heater of this size draws a lot of power (The Brew is rated 1,450W), so you need a transformer rated well above that.
- UK/EU (230V): you must use a step-down transformer. A plug adapter alone will destroy the machine.
- Warranties are usually valid in Japan only, and manuals are in Japanese.
Amazon.co.jp ships many items internationally, and the CM-D457B is listed with international shipping on Amazon Japan. Check the listing for your country, plus import fees.

BALMUDA The Brew: a precision pour-over you'll want on display
Launched in October 2021, The Brew drips water in 0.2ml steps into a dedicated cone dripper and changes temperature for blooming, extraction, and finishing. At the end it adds a bypass pour that skips the coffee bed, aiming for a strong cup with a clean finish. There are three modes: Regular, Strong, and Iced. You can watch steam rise as the grounds bloom, which is a big part of its appeal.
- What owners like: 4.3 out of 5 on Amazon Japan (166 ratings). Owners praise the design, the pleasure of watching it brew, and the clean taste.
- What to weigh: Kakaku.com owner reviews average 3.45 (24 reviews), so opinions are mixed. It has no grinder, brews 3 cups max, and has no warming plate.

TWINBIRD CM-D465B (6-cup): bean-to-cup, guided by a master roaster
TWINBIRD is based in Tsubame-Sanjo. Its fully automatic maker uses a slow flat burr mill to limit heat from friction, a six-direction shower head, and a bloom step to imitate hand pouring. You can pick coarse, medium, or fine grind and an 83°C or 90°C brew temperature (90°C suits dark roasts and iced coffee). It comes with two drippers sized for different batch sizes.
- What owners like: 4.53 on Kakaku.com (21 reviews) and 4.4 out of 5 on Amazon Japan (420 ratings). Taste is the most common praise.
- What to weigh: at 42.5cm tall it needs clearance under cabinets.

TWINBIRD CM-D457B (3-cup): the same approach, smaller
Same mill, temperatures, and grind settings as the CM-D465B, with a 450ml capacity and a 36cm height. It has sold steadily since 2018 and ranked #7 of 1,105 coffee makers on Kakaku.com's best-seller list on November 1, 2026.
- What owners like: 4.46 on Kakaku.com (40 reviews) and 4.4 out of 5 on Amazon Japan (822 ratings). One owner who switched from Panasonic wrote that taste is what matters, and rated it above their old machine.
- What to weigh: in a video review by Nif Coffee, a Japanese roaster's channel, grinding 3 cups took about 4 min 16 s, and you have to measure water and beans yourself each time. Some Kakaku.com owners also find the mill tedious to clean.
